Getting Your Garden Autumn-Ready: A Complete Guide

Get your Garden Autumn ready

As summer’s vibrant colours begin to wane, Autumn brings its own unique charm to your garden. With cooler temperatures and shorter days on the horizon, now is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the months ahead. In this blog we will share with you our eight gardening tips to get your garden Autumn-ready.

Kilcannon’s tips for getting your garden Autumn-ready

1. Tidy Up the Garden Beds
Start by giving your garden a good tidy-up. Remove any dead or dying plants, spent annuals, and fallen leaves. This helps prevent disease and pests in your garden. It is also a great time to cut back perennials that have finished blooming.

2. Plant Spring Bulbs
Autumn is the ideal time to start planting Spring-flowering bulbs like Tulips, Daffodils, and Cyclamen. These hardy bulbs need the cold winter months to develop properly and they will certainly reward you with a fabulous burst of colour come Spring. When planting, make sure to choose well-drained soil and plant bulbs at a depth of about three times their height.

3. Add Autumn Colour
While Summer blooms may be lessening, your garden doesn’t have to lose its amazing colour. Introduce Autumn-flowering plants like Asters, Dahlias, and Chrysanthemums. Consider planting shrubs like Heathers and Winter-flowering Pansies to keep your garden colourful throughout Autumn and into Winter.

4. Mulch Your Beds
Applying a layer of mulch is one of the best things you can do for your garden in Autumn. Mulch helps to insulate your soil and retain moisture. Spread a layer about 2-3 inches thick over your garden beds, being careful not to cover plant crowns. We have Mulch available in Kilcannon Garden Centre, so make sure you come in and prepare for the Autumn season with us.

5. Prepare Your Lawn
Your lawn will benefit from some extra TLC as Autumn sets in. Gather up fallen leaves regularly to prevent them from smothering your grass. Consider giving your lawn one final cut before Winter, raising the mower blade slightly to keep the grass healthy. Autumn is also a great time to aerate your lawn and apply an Autumn-specific fertiliser to strengthen roots. Don’t forget to bring your lawnmower for a service and get your blade sharpened or purchase a new one if needed.

6. Protect Delicate Plants
If you have any tender plants that won’t survive the Winter outdoors, now is the time to move them into a greenhouse or indoors. Alternatively, you can wrap them in horticultural fleece to provide some protection against frost. Consider bringing potted plants closer to the house for extra shelter.

7. Feed the Wildlife
As natural food sources dwindle, consider putting out bird feeders to help sustain local wildlife through the winter. Provide a variety of seeds, nuts, and suet to attract different species. Leaving some plant seed heads and berry-producing plants in your garden can also provide a natural food source for birds.

8. Plan Ahead
Finally, Autumn is a great time to reflect on your garden’s successes and challenges over the past year. Take notes, make plans, and perhaps sketch out new ideas for the next growing season. Consider visiting Kilcannon Garden Centre for inspiration and to stock up on Autumn essentials to keep your garden looking its best.
