April Garden To-Do’s

Plant Summer-Flowering Bulbs

Now is the time to plant bulbs that will bring bold colour later in the season. Think dahlias, lilies, and gladioli. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot and plant according to depth instructions. A little effort now means a spectacular summer display.

Let Daffodil Foliage Die Back Naturally

It may be tempting to tidy up fading daffodils, but resist the urge. The leaves are still feeding the bulb for next year’s blooms. Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it.

Sow New Lawns & Repair Patches

April’s mild temperatures and regular rainfall create ideal conditions for lawn care. Sow new grass seed or repair bare patches now to give it time to establish before summer. Keep the soil moist for best results.

Prune Fig Trees

If you have a fig tree, now’s the moment to prune lightly. Remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to improve airflow and encourage better fruiting later in the year.

Sow Hardy Annuals & Wildflowers

Directly sow hardy annuals like calendula, cornflowers, and nigella. Wildflower mixes are also perfect for creating a pollinator-friendly garden. Simply scatter seeds over prepared soil and water gently.

Increase Houseplant Watering

As indoor plants come out of their winter slowdown, they’ll need more water and attention. Check soil regularly and increase watering gradually—just don’t let them sit in waterlogged conditions.

Feed Fruit Trees & Shrubs

Give your fruit trees and bushes a boost with a balanced fertiliser. This helps support strong growth, flowering, and fruit development. Water well after feeding to help nutrients soak in.

Tie in Climbing Roses

As climbing roses begin to grow vigorously, tie in new shoots to supports. Training them horizontally encourages more flowers and creates a fuller, more attractive display.

Mulch Beds to Suppress Weeds

Apply a layer of organic mulch (such as compost or bark) around plants. This helps retain moisture, improve soil health, and keep weeds under control as temperatures rise.

Start Sowing Herbs

Herbs like basil, parsley, and chives can be started now, either indoors or outdoors depending on your climate. Fresh herbs are easy to grow and incredibly rewarding in the kitchen.

Provide Water Dishes for Birds

Wildlife needs support too. Place shallow dishes of fresh water in your garden for birds and pollinators. Keep them clean and topped up, especially during dry spells.
