There’s nothing quite like the scent of fresh pine welcoming you home at Christmas. At Kilcannon Garden Centre and Restaurant, our handmade wreaths are full of festive fragrance and natural Irish greenery. With just a little care, your wreath can stay lush, vibrant, and merry right through the Christmas season. (Anything we can do to make the sparkly season last a little longer right?)
Here’s how to keep it looking its best
Choose the Perfect Spot
When hanging your wreath, avoid direct sunlight, open fires, or radiators. So, basically heat can cause the needles to dry out faster. Instead, choose a cool, shaded spot. A front door (the favourite), porch, or hallway are all ideal. Of course, if your front door does get direct sunlight all day, we’ll give you a handy tip later to deal with that, so keep reading..
Lock in the Moisture
A great tip for wreaths inside (especially with indoor heating this time of year) is to mist your wreath regularly. A light spritz of water every few days keeps the foliage hydrated. For extra protection, spray it with an anti-transpirant (we don’t stock this, but you may be able to get it in a floist) or even a touch of unscented hairspray. This helps seal in moisture and slows needle drop.
Give It a Weekly Drink
If your wreath has a moss or straw base (ours don’t, but if you make your own this would be helpful), it can actually absorb water. Simply immerse the base in a basin or sink of cool water for 5–10 minutes once a week. Allow it to drip dry before rehanging. This keeps the wreath looking plump and fresh all through December.
Reuse or Recycle After Christmas
When the season ends, don’t throw it away! The foliage can go straight to your compost heap or green waste bin, and many of the decorations can be reused next year.
How to Help Your Front Door Wreath With Direct Sunlight
If your front door gets a lot of direct sunlight, your wreath will naturally dry out faster. Mist it regularly. Give your wreath a light mist of water every one to two days. Early morning or late evening is best, when the sun isn’t strong, so the moisture has time to soak in.
Spraying your wreath with an anti-transpirant or unscented hairspray creates a thin protective layer that helps lock in moisture. This reduces the drying effect of sunlight.
Rotate the wreath. If only one side faces the sun, try rotating it every few days so it dries evenly and keeps its colour longer.
