Keep Your Garden Happy in the Heat

Keep Your Garden Happy in the Heat Kilcannon Garden Centre

We’ve been blessed with some truly gorgeous weather lately. However, while we’re all enjoying the long sunny days, it’s important to remember that our gardens feel the heat too. So, you want to know how to keep your garden happy in the heat? Well, just like us, plants need a little extra care and attention when temperatures rise. So, this is our little reminder for you also, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Now, here are a few simple ways to help your garden thrive during this hot spell.

6 Tips to Follow This Summer

1. Water Wisely
Timing is everything when it comes to watering. Aim to water either early in the morning or later in the evening, when the sun is lower. This helps prevent water from evaporating too quickly and therefore gives plants the chance to soak it all in properly. A deep soak a few times a week is better than a quick sprinkle every day, because it encourages roots to grow deeper and become more drought-resilient.

2. Don’t Forget to Deadhead
Removing spent flowers not only keeps your garden looking tidy but also encourages more flowers. Regular deadheading redirects the plant’s energy into new growth rather than seed production. If you’re not sure of the best way to go about it, we’ve just shared a handy video guide to help you get it right.

3. Mulch Where You Can
Adding a layer of mulch, whether it’s bark, straw, or compost all around the base of your plants helps to retain moisture and keeps the roots cool. Also, it helps to suppress weeds, which are particularly opportunistic during warmer months, pesky little things!

4. Shade the More Sensitive
Some plants just don’t love too much direct sun. Kind of like myself really. So, consider moving potted plants to shadier spots or using temporary shade covers for more delicate areas of your garden. Even a well-placed parasol or bit of shade netting can make a big difference to your plants. They’ll appreciate you more if you give them a little bit of shade.

5. Keep an Eye on Containers
Pots and hanging baskets dry out much faster than borders. They may need watering more frequently, even daily especially during particularly hot days. Just remember, early or late is best!

6. Feed Gently
If you’re feeding your plants, go easy during hot weather. High heat can make roots sensitive, so opt for diluted liquid feeds and apply in the cooler parts of the day to avoid stressing your plants. A stressed plant, is not a happy plant.

So, with a little extra attention, you can keep your garden happy in the heat. And don’t forget to take a moment to sit back, enjoy the sun, and admire all your hard work. Maybe with a visit to our garden centre for inspiration! And just in case you need to hear it today, no you can never have too many plants.. go on pick up another one while you’re here.

What Happens If You Don’t Prioritise Your Garden in the Heat?

When hot weather hits and the garden is left to fend for itself, things can go downhill very quickly. Plants that don’t get enough water can become stressed, wilt, and in some cases, not recover at all. After all, they’re livings things like us, and we wouldn’t survive without water, right? Flowers fade faster, soil dries out, and pests like aphids tend to move in when plants are weakened. Without regular deadheading, flowering plants may stop producing altogether. As a result of this little neglect, especially during a heatwave, we can undo weeks of growth! So it’s worth staying on top of things to keep your garden healthy and full of life.

Heading Away? Here’s How to Keep Your Garden Happy

If you’ve got a trip planned, a few small steps can make a big difference in keeping your garden looking great while you’re away.

Firstly, invest in some slow-release water drip feeders or watering spikes, these are perfect for pots and hanging baskets and will keep soil moist for a few days. Secondly, move containers into shadier spots to reduce water loss, and give everything a good soak before you leave. Next, if you’ll be away for more than a few days, it’s always worth asking a neighbour or friend to pop in and check on things, especially during a heatwave. A quick deadhead or a top-up of water could be all it takes to keep things blooming until you return. Although these tips will help, they can’t be guaranteed to keep everything perfect, especially if we unexpectedly get a heatwave. But, they will definitely help.
