Read along to hear our tips for keeping your tree looking merry and bright throughout the Christmas season.

Tips to keep your Christmas Tree Fresh

1. Choose the Right Tree
First things first, the key to a long-lasting Christmas tree starts with selecting the right one. When visiting Kilcannon Garden Centre you’ll notice we give our trees plenty of TLC, look for fresh needles, gently run your hand along a branch; the needles should feel soft and pliable, not brittle. Secondly, you know that Christmas tree smell you love? Well the perfect tree will have a lovely pine scent. Lastly, the colour. avoid trees with brown patches or dry, dull needles – don’t worry, we don’t have any of those in Kilcannon, so you’ll find your PERFECT tree with us.

2. Trim the Trunk
Before setting your tree in its stand, cut about 2-3cm off the base of the trunk. This opens up the pores and helps the tree absorb water more efficiently. If you’re not putting your tree up right away, store it in a bucket of water in a cool, shaded spot outside.

3. Place It in the Right Spot
Your tree’s location plays a big role in how long it lasts. So, choose a spot that avoids direct heat such as radiators, fireplaces, or sunny windows, this will prevent it drying out. Next, make sure it has a stable temperature, so avoid drafts from doors or vents that can stress the tree.

4. Water Regularly
A Christmas tree can drink up to 2-3 litres of water per day, so make sure you keep that tree hydrated! And while you’re at it, make sure you’re keeping yourself hydrated too. Check the tree daily, keep the stand filled with water and never let the base dry out. Once it dries, the tree will stop absorbing water, and its needles will shed faster.

5. Minimize Needle Loss
To keep needles intact and your tree looking lush, handle your tree with care, so avoid heavy or sharp ornaments that may weigh down the branches. Use LED lights if you can as they emit less heat which will help your tree keep its moisture.

6. Extend Its Life
If you want to keep your tree fresh well into the New Year, keep it cool. Lowering your room’s temperature by a few degrees at night can help preserve the tree, so during the winter when we love to have a roaring fire, just let a little air in every so often so your tree doesn’t get too hot. Keeping it watered will help with this.

What to Do After Christmas

When the festive season is over, consider recycling your tree, many local councils in Ireland offer tree recycling services, turning trees into mulch for parks and gardens. You can also repurpose branches as mulch for your garden or use the wood for DIY projects. Check out the link below for Christmas Tree Shredding in Wexford.
