Celebrating 50 years of Reach Ability with our new logo

Mar

2025 is a significant year for Reach Ability as we celebrate 50 years of dedicated support for individuals with disabilities. Since our founding in 1975, we have grown from modest beginnings to become one of the largest service providers in the south-east for people with intellectual disabilities. This remarkable journey over the past half-century has been marked by progress, growth, and, most importantly, empowerment. To honour this incredible milestone, we are excited to be celebrating 50 years of Reach Ability with our new logo. This logo was created by the talented Eddie from InTuition Vocational Training.

A Logo that Represents 50 Years of Empowerment

The new logo created by Eddie is not just a visual mark. It represents the values and mission that have guided Reach Ability for the last fifty years. So with a passion for cartoons, animation, and graphic design, Eddie infused his creativity into a design that embodies our commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and community. He explains, “I tried to make the arms as anatomically correct as possible, as most designs have noodle arms. This idea popped into my head that it would be a self-portrait of me holding the number 50 above my head.” It’s a simple yet powerful way to celebrate both personal and collective achievements.

Des, a tutor from InTuition provided valuable feedback to enhance Eddie’s design. Together they developed a logo that truly captures the essence of Reach Ability’s 50-year legacy. Eddie’s design won our competition, and we were thrilled to celebrate it during a special presentation at InTuition. Eddie sums it up perfectly: “I am really proud of myself, and I hope to improve my design in the future.” We couldn’t be prouder of Eddie, his talents, and his contribution to this significant anniversary.

Our Journey: From County Wexford Community Workshop to Reach Ability

Founded in 1975 by a passionate group of volunteers led by the inspiring Fr. Tony Scallan, Reach Ability has become a vital source of support for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Since then, we have expanded our services to support more than 200 individuals, from early childhood through to older age. With a dedicated team of over 150 staff members and volunteers, we are more committed than ever to helping each person we serve reach their full potential.

In 2023, we made a significant change by rebranding from County Wexford Community Workshop to Reach Ability. This decision was made to better align with our forward-thinking mission and to honour the legacy of Fr. Scallan, a true pioneer in disability services. The name Reach Ability reflects our commitment to empowering individuals to achieve personal fulfillment and live life to the fullest.

Our Social Enterprises: Supporting the Community

At Reach Ability, we believe in creating opportunities for independence and growth. That’s why we established several social enterprises to support our services. Kilcannon Garden Centre and Restaurant, Astro Active Centre, and Bellefield Design are not just commercial ventures; they are vital to funding our programs and providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By supporting these ventures, you are directly contributing to the services we provide and helping individuals achieve their goals.

Our Vision and Mission

Our vision is simple but powerful: we strive for communities where every person can reach their own personal, social, educational, and career fulfilment. We are driven by our mission to enable and empower people with disabilities to live the life of their choice and reach their utmost potential.

Our values are at the heart of everything we do. The support we provide is designed to nurture and develop ability, offer choices regarding personal decisions, and ensure equality and respect for all. We create person-cantered, community-based services that encourage active citizenship and are built on the principles of dignity and respect.

InTuition Vocational Training: A Stepping Stone to Success

We are incredibly grateful for the InTuition Vocational Training which is located in Kilcannon Garden Centre & Restaurant. It has been instrumental in helping individuals develop their skills and find meaningful work. InTuition is a specialist training programme that supports students with learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, or other challenges. Through this programme, students receive the support they need to thrive in a variety of real-world settings.

The programme not only helps individuals gain employability skills. It also provides opportunities to make new connections, form friendships, and grow in a supportive, inclusive environment. The success of the programme is measured by the personal development of each student. Whether they move on to further education, secure employment, or simply gain valuable life skills.

Looking Ahead: 50 Years of Possibility

As we mark our 50th anniversary, we eagerly anticipate the continuation of our mission to empower individuals with disabilities and positively impact our community. Our commitment to providing person-cantered support, promoting independence, and creating growth opportunities remains strong.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. Our dedicated staff, volunteers, partners, and the incredible individuals we serve. Together, we have fostered a vibrant community filled with endless possibilities. We are excited about what the next 50 years will hold. We look forward to achieving new levels of inclusion, empowerment, and community engagement.

Here’s to another 50 years of helping individuals reach their full potential and make a meaningful impact on the world around them. Happy 50th anniversary, Reach Ability!
