When we think about gardens, we usually think about colour and flowers. But your garden can also become something incredibly important… a safe haven for bees. For #WorldBeeDay, we wanted to shine a light on some beautiful plants that don’t just look great in your garden, but also help support one of nature’s hardest workers.
Bees play a huge role in pollinating plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Without them, our gardens (and food supply) would look very different. The good news? Even small changes in your garden can make a massive difference. And the best part? Bee-friendly gardens are usually colourful, fragrant, and full of life.
Why Bees Matter So Much
Bees are responsible for pollinating around a third of the food we eat. Every time a bee visits a flower, it helps plants reproduce and grow. But bee populations have been struggling in recent years due to loss of natural habitats, pesticides, climate change and a serious lack of pollinator-friendly plants. That’s why planting bee-friendly flowers is one of the easiest and most positive things we can all do.
Plants the Bees Will Love 🐝
Here are some of our favourite bee-friendly plants to add to your garden.
Lavender
A classic favourite for both gardeners and bees. Lavender is packed with nectar, smells incredible, and flowers for long periods during summer. Bees absolutely love it. One of the best parts? it’s super low maintenance once established. It would be perfect for borders, pots, sunny spots. It’s great near a door because you’ll get to smell it every time you go in or out.
Sunflowers
Sunflowers provide pollen and nectar for bees while also adding huge visual impact to your garden. Kids love growing them too, making them a brilliant family-friendly option. Bonus tip: Leave the seed heads later in the season for birds to enjoy.
Rosemary
Fragrant, and super useful in the kitchen. Rosemary produces delicate flowers that attract pollinators while giving you fresh herbs to cook with. It’s a win-win plant for any garden. Bees especially appreciate rosemary because it can flower during cooler months when food sources are limited.
Sedum
One of the best late-season plants for pollinators. Sedum flowers later in the year when many other blooms are fading, providing an important food source for bees heading into autumn. It’s also incredibly easy to grow and looks fantastic in borders and rockeries.
Geranium
Hardy geraniums are brilliant for adding long-lasting colour while attracting bees throughout the flowering season. They’re easy to care for and fit beautifully into almost any style of garden.
Chives
When chives flower, they produce gorgeous purple blooms that bees adore. They’re compact, easy to grow, and perfect for pots or vegetable gardens. Plus, you get fresh chives for cooking too.
Foxglove
Foxgloves are absolutely loved by bumblebees thanks to their bell-shaped flowers. They bring height and drama to garden beds while creating a real pollinator hotspot. They’re perfect for cottage gardens and more natural planting styles.
Small Changes Make a Big Difference
You don’t need a huge garden to help bees. So, even just a few pots on a patio, a window box, a herb planter or a corner filled with flowers…can provide food and shelter for pollinators. Try mixing plants that flower at different times of the year so bees always have something to enjoy.
Create a Garden Full of Life
One of the loveliest things about planting for bees is that your garden becomes more alive. There is more movement, more colour, more buzzing, and more nature to enjoy. So this World Bee Day, why not plant something beautiful for both you and the bees?
