Spring is here, and it’s the ideal time to revitalize your lawn after a long, rainy winter. We understand that keeping a vibrant, green lawn can be tough, particularly with that wet weather promoting moss growth in your garden. But don’t fret—Kilcannon Garden Centre and Restaurant has all the supplies you need to rejuvenate your lawn! Keep reading to learn more about Spring lawn care.
1. Assess Your Lawn’s Condition
Before starting any lawn treatments for your Spring lawn care, take a moment to evaluate your lawn. Check for:
✔️ Areas with moss or weeds
✔️ Bare patches where grass has had a tough time surviving the winter
✔️ Compacted soil that hinders healthy root development
✔️ Evidence of waterlogging due to heavy rainfall
2. Remove Moss & Feed Your Lawn Naturally
Moss can be a significant problem in Irish gardens, especially in damp and shady areas. So, if your lawn is infested with moss, we suggest trying Westland Moss Master. This is a completely natural moss remover and lawn feed. It operates in two ways: Firstly, it naturally eliminates moss – No raking required! So handy! It basically breaks down the moss, allowing it to be easily absorbed into the soil. Secondly, it nourishes your lawn. It is so rich in nutrients which promotes thicker, greener grass, which is what everybody wants! Right?
Apply Westland Moss Master on a dry day when rain is expected in the next 48 hours. Wait 7-10 days before mowing. No need to rake as dead moss will be broken down. You simply scatter evenly over your lawn, and let it work its magic! Green, lush grass in no time.
3. Control Weeds & Strengthen Your Grass
Weeds can easily dominate a lawn if not managed properly. They may just be the bane of everyone’s existence. If you’re facing issues with dandelions, clover, or other lawn weeds, Westland Lawn All-In-One is the perfect answer. This effective blend firstly nourishes the grass, enhancing its strength and resilience against future weeds and moss. Secondly, it eliminates moss and weeds, promoting a healthier, greener lawn. Sounds like a win-win to us!
For best results, apply when the grass is actively growing. So that would be around March – September. Make sure you then avoid mowing for four days after treatment to give it its best shot. Water it within 48 hours if no rain falls. After 7-14 days rake out dead moss and weeds.
4. Aerate & Reseed for a Healthier Lawn
Over time, soil can easily become compacted. This makes it difficult for grass roots to take in nutrients and water. So, to remedy this, we have the perfect solution for you. Use a garden fork or aerator to break up the soil and improve drainage. If your lawn has thin or bare spots, over-seed with high-quality grass seed to promote uniform growth. We have a video on our socials explaining how to aerate your lawn. You can watch it here
5. Mowing & Watering Tips for Spring
Start mowing when the grass starts to grow. That sounds simple, but you should avoid cutting it too short. We recommend trying to keep it around 4-5 cm to maintain its strength, only ever remove a third of its height at each cutting. If there’s a dry period, make sure to water thoroughly once a week instead of lightly every day to promote deep root development.
