Is Your Garden Missing a Splash of August Colour?

August colour for your garden - what to choose

After our chat with Eoin yesterday in our video, one thing was clear, August is not the time to let your garden fade into the background. Your garden should be full of colour and life right now, buzzing with pollinators and full of movement. If yours is looking a little tired and you’re looking to add some of Eoin’s suggestions but want to know a little more first? We are going to dive into some star plants for you to choose some August colour for your garden.

August Colour Options

First up, Crocosmia. There fiery colours suit the glow of the August light. They are hardy and dependable meaning Crocosmia will come back stronger every year. They often spread to give you more colour each Summer. This makes them perfect for cutting and bringing indoors.
Care tip: Plant in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Leave foliage to die back naturally for energy to return to the corms.

Next, we have Lavender. Silvery-green foliage, calming purple blooms, and a scent that transports you straight to a Mediterranean holiday. What’s not to love? Lavender thrives in sunny spots and it brings bees and butterflies in abundance.
Care tip: So, it needs good drainage, don’t overwater. You can trim lightly after flowering to keep its shape, but avoid cutting into the woody stems.

Thirdly, Alstroemeria. Also called the Peruvian lily, this generous bloomer gives exotic-looking flowers from June into Autumn. The best thing? The blooms last for ages in a vase and come in warm, joyful colours.
Care tip: Plant in rich, well-drained soil in sun or light shade. If you want a longer vase life, pull the stems gently from the base rather than cutting.

Next we have Gaura (‘Whirling Butterflies’). Soft, fluttery white or pink flowers that dance in the breeze. We love to see them sway, so peaceful. It is a perfect plant for adding a light, airy feel to borders, flowering right into the first frosts.
Care tip: Prefers full sun and free-draining soil. Cut back hard in spring to encourage fresh growth.

Next, we have Perovskia (Russian Sage). Silvery stems topped with violet-blue flowers create both colour and texture. These combine beautifully with golden Rudbeckias or fiery Crocosmia.
Care tip: Loves full sun and poor, sandy, or gravelly soil. Cut back to low woody stems in late winter or early spring.

Finally, we have Hebes. Evergreen and versatile, Hebes bring year-round structure plus flower spikes in purples, pinks, and whites. These are a real pollinator favourite.
Care tip: Plant in well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Trim lightly after flowering to keep them compact.

Other Late-Summer All-Stars

Firstly, Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan). Daisy-like golden flowers with deep brown centres. They are perfect for adding cheer to borders.
Care tip: Full sun, fertile soil, and regular deadheading will keep them blooming.

Secondly, Sedum (Stonecrop). Clusters of pink to deep red flowers. They are adored by bees and butterflies. There flowers deepen in colour as the season cools.
Care tip: Thrives in full sun and poor soil. Cut back in spring when new shoots appear.

Thirdly, Dahlias. From tiny pom-poms to giant dinner-plate blooms, Dahlias deliver show-stopping colour until the first frost. We can see why they are a gardeners favourite.
Care tip: Full sun, rich soil, and regular deadheading. Lift tubers after frost for winter storage in colder areas.

August Gardening, A Few Reminders

– Deadhead regularly. This keeps plants producing more flowers.
– Water deeply. Especially in pots and baskets during dry spells. They need the water.
– Feed fortnightly. Liquid feed will keep flowers going strong. We have plenty of options in stock so just pop in and talk to any of our team.
– Plan ahead. Think about filling gaps with perennials or shrubs for next year, and be ready for Autumn bulb planting.
