Why Staying Active in Retirement Can Help You Feel Your Best

Retirement is a great time to try something new, meet people and make more time for the things you enjoy. Staying active definitely doesn’t have to mean joining a gym or following a demanding workout routine. It can be as simple as dancing, playing bowls and having a bit of fun with others. At Astro Active, our Active Retirement classes are a great way to get moving while enjoying the social side of being active.

Line Dancing: Mondays

If you love music and having a laugh, our Monday morning line dancing class could be for you! Line dancing is a fun way to keep moving. It can help with coordination, balance, mobility and fitness. Dancing is a really great way to stay active without it feeling like traditional exercise. You’re learning, moving and enjoying yourself at the same time. Sounds great, right?

And there’s the social side too. Group activities can be a great way to meet people, build connections and give you something to look forward to each week. The HSE recommends dancing as one example of moderate physical activity for older adults.

Class is Mondays 11am

Bowls: Mondays & Wednesdays

Prefer something a little more relaxed? Our bowls sessions offer another great way to stay active and social. So, Bowls involves movement, coordination and concentration. It also gives you the chance to enjoy some friendly competition and plenty of conversation. Who doesn’t love a little bit of friendly competition, right? Indoor bowls is also recognised by the HSE as an example of physical activity for older people.

Classes are Mondays at 1pm and Wednesdays at 11am

Why stay active as you get older?

Being active is about much more than physical fitness. Regular activity can help support mobility, balance, strength, energy levels and mental wellbeing, while helping people maintain independence as they get older. But perhaps one of the biggest benefits of joining a group is the social connection. Getting out, meeting others and taking part in activities you enjoy can be great for your mood and sense of community. The HSE also recommends choosing activities you enjoy, as you’re more likely to keep them as part of your routine.

And you don’t have to be super-fit or sporty to get started. Every move counts, and the best activity is one that you enjoy and can do comfortably.
