At Kilcannon Garden Centre & Restaurant, sustainability is something we care deeply about. Not just on World Environment Day, but every day of the year. We believe that even small, practical changes in how we operate can add up to a meaningful impact over time.
As we continue to grow, we’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint while still providing a welcoming space for our customers, our community, and our team. So, keep reading to learn about some of the key ways we’re doing that.
Harnessing the Power of the Sun
One of our most important additions has been the installation of solar panels on-site last year. These panels now play a significant role in powering our business.
On sunny days, they generate up to 75% of our energy needs, and even on cloudier days (which there can be a lot of, we know), they still provide around 36% of our energy. What this does is, it helps us reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources and move towards a more sustainable way of operating.
While the Irish weather keeps us on our toes, the consistency of solar energy production (even in less-than-perfect conditions) has been a very positive step forward for us.
Supporting Greener Travel Choices
We also introduced electric vehicle charging points in our front car park a few years ago.
As more people make the switch to electric vehicles, we want to support that transition by making charging more accessible while visiting us. Customers can top up their vehicle while they enjoy their time with us.
It’s a small addition that we hope makes sustainable travel that bit easier.
Tunnel to Tummy
One of the initiatives we’re most proud of is our Tunnel to Tummy growing system. Many of the veggies used in our restaurant are grown right here on site, just a short distance from the kitchen. So, what this means is reduced food miles. Fresher, seasonal ingredients. Less packaging and transport waste and a stronger connection between grower, chef, and customer.
It’s a simple idea, but one that makes a big difference. When food is grown and served in the same place, it not only tastes better but also supports a more sustainable food system.
A Work in Progress
Sustainability is not something that is ever “finished.” It’s an ongoing process of learning, improving, and making better choices where we can.
We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, but we’re always looking ahead to see what more we can do. From energy use to sourcing, waste reduction, and beyond.
Most importantly, we want to thank our customers and community for supporting these efforts. Every visit, every meal, and every conversation is part of this journey.
Looking Ahead
World Environment Day is a great reminder that the future is shaped by the choices we make today. At Kilcannon, we’re committed to continuing that journey, one step at a time, together.
