Celebrate International Day of Yoga at Astro Active

Chair yoga benefits astro active for international day of yoga

This year’s International Day of Yoga carries a meaningful message: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health” This theme reminds us that personal wellbeing and the health of our planet are deeply connected. Would you agree? So, when we make time to care for our own bodies and minds, we naturally make choices that benefit the world around us, from how we eat, to how we move, to how we think and feel about the environment.

At Astro Active Centre, we honour this message with our unique approach to yoga: Chair Yoga classes, twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays. While we don’t currently offer traditional mat-based yoga, Chair Yoga offers its own set of wonderful benefits. Also, this class makes yoga accessible to everyone, especially those of us who spend long hours sitting at a desk.

Why Chair Yoga?

In today’s busy world, many people struggle to find time (or flexibility!) for a full yoga session. Chair Yoga is the perfect solution, it is simple, low-impact movements you can do while sitting. It really is that easy to incorporate into your day to day life. So, who’s it ideal for?

Firstly, desk workers who spend long hours in front of a screen. Sitting at a desk all day often leads to tight hips, rounded shoulders, stiff necks, and lower back pain. Chair Yoga helps gently stretch and strengthen these areas, improving posture and reducing discomfort, without ever needing to leave your chair. Furthermore it also boosts focus and energy, breaking up long periods of inactivity that can drain both body and mind.

Secondly, older adults or those with mobility issues. Traditional yoga can feel intimidating or inaccessible for those with limited mobility, balance challenges, or joint pain. In contrast, Chair Yoga offers a safe, supportive way to move the body, build strength, and increase flexibility. It encourages gentle, controlled movement while reducing the risk of strain or injury. For this reason it is the better option.

Thirdly, anyone looking to gently improve flexibility, posture, and mental clarity without needing a mat or special clothing. Whether at home, at work, or even during travel, these easy movements can help you feel better anytime, anywhere.

Our classes at Astro Active teach you practical stretches, breathing exercises, and mindful movements that you can then bring into your daily life, even while sitting at your desk at work!

The Benefits of Chair Yoga

Whether in our class or at your workplace, Chair Yoga offers:

Firstly, better posture: It releases tension in the neck, shoulders, and back. The areas that tighten the most when sitting for hours.
Next, improved focus & energy: Gentle movements paired with mindful breathing help reduce mental fog and improve concentration. This is a great benefit for busy workdays.
Thirdly, stress relief: Regular practice helps calm the nervous system, reducing anxiety and boosting mood.
Next, increased mobility & flexibility: Perfect for joints and muscles that become stiff as a result of inactivity.
Lastly, eco-friendly wellbeing: By practicing yoga in your daily environment you’re embracing the spirit of sustainability. This reflects the theme of caring for your body and the Earth. If we can do even the smallest things to help the Earth, shouldn’t we at least try do that?

Small Actions, Big Impact

When we take care of ourselves, we naturally make better choices for the world. Mindful living reduces stress-driven habits like overconsumption or wastefulness. In this way, Chair Yoga isn’t just good for you. It’s good for the planet. We should keep this in mind on International Day of Yoga.

So why not start with your next work break? Take what you learn in our classes and stretch, breathe, and centre yourself, even while seated at your desk.
